What Happened to My Happy Baby?

Over the last couple days, Mia seems to have been fighting of a little "something." Stuffy nose, weeping out of one eye, low-grade fever. Today she seems to be better, all those symptoms are gone...but we've moved right into a growth spurt. Since 7:15 this morning, she's not gone longer than 2 hours between feedings. Most are more like 60-90 minutes. Between those feedings she HAS to be held. I've tried putting her on the playmat, the swing, the bouncy chair...she's not having any of it today. It's all Mommy, all the time. And, heaven forbid, I have to put her down to use the bathroom? Ear-piercing screams.

In all this, she's had one short nap, that lasted for about 15 minutes. It's 2:30 now, and I think I finally have her down for an afternoon nap.

My theme song for today:

Fortunately for her, those big blue eyes looking up at me is still enough to make me take a deep breath, gulp down another caffeinated beverage, and head back into the trenches.

Trying out the Baby Bjorn. This worked for awhile, but it's alot of stress on my back, and I could only do it for about 45 minutes before I needed a break.

What are you taking pictures of, Mommy?

Wiped out

It's been 20 minutes since I heard any sound come across the monitor. I think I may be safe for the next couple hours. Phew! Off to make a pasta salad for dinner.

If you're nursing, those caffeinated beverages make their way into the milk. Mia might be jonesing for some java.

This explains why my mom [who nursed 4 kids in the 60s when nobody else did] told me that the evening beer would 'help my milk production.' Probably didn't hurt that babies and I were all much more mellow.

I try to reserve my caffeine hit for when she goes down for her longer nap in the afternoon. Most days I'm successful :p

Hmmm...I wonder if an evening glass of wine would "help my milk production" ;) Anything for the baby, you know....

She's so adorable! Sorry you've hit a rough patch. It sounds like you're handling it well though! Have I already recommended the Ergo carrier? Sometimes you can find them on ebay. I can still carry Lilly in it comfortably (at 30 pounds), where I retired the Bjorn at about 4 months. It's definitely worth the investment for traveling alone (it can go hip, back, and front once they're bigger). Hope she feels better soon and you can get some rest!

I second getting an Ergo or another two-shouldered carrier (a Mei-Tai such as the BabyHawk or Kozy Carrier, for example). Commercial carriers like the Bjorn or the Snuggli aren't meant for long-term baby-wearing and put a lot of stress on mom's shoulders and baby's hips.

I personally swear by my BabyHawk, which I've been using since my 2-year-old was my current baby's age (3 months old). It's made baby-wearing insanely comfortable and easy, and has allowed me to wear a napping child for up to 3 hours at a time - totally worth it!

Hope that helps!

Thanks ladies. I don't have an Ergo (may have to look into it), but I DO have the Bjorn that she loves, because she can face outward and she gets to ride along with Mommy. Mostly, I think she's at that age where she WANTS to be mobile, but she's just not big enough yet. Heaven help me when she starts to crawl ;)
