But we're obviously not experienced. Below is our list of "still needs." Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, any seasoned baby veterans....have we missed anything essential?
- Baby bathtub, wash cloths, and towels- I have all the "cleaning" supplies, but not the actual infant tub or linens
- Car seat/stroller combination- This is our last big ticket item. We have one picked out, but haven't made the purchase yet. We also received a second car seat base, so we'll have a base in each car to click the carrier into.
- Extra play yard sheets- One of the pastors at our church donated a pack n' play, but I need to buy a few extra sheets.
- Extra changing table covers- I have one, but no extras and I'm sure she'll dirty that one at some point.
- Homecoming outfit- We have a ton of onesies and everyday type of clothes, but I want something "special." I don't know what size to buy, though. Do I buy a newborn and keep my fingers crossed that she's not 8 pounds or more? Or do I buy the next size up, and have it possibly be a little big. If it's a dress, will it matter?
- Hats- She'll be an early spring baby, so I want a few head coverings for those occassions when we do leave the house.
- Sleepers
- Boppy pillow covers- A family friend is lending me her Boppy (nursing) pillow, but I need to buy the washable covers
We have tons of clothing, blankets, and burp cloths. The changing table upstairs is stocked with diapers, wipes, lotion, and rash cream. Extra diapers from newborn to size 2 are stocked in the closet. I have vanity items (brush, comb, clippers, etc.) and first aid items (thermometer, swabs, alcohol wipes, etc.). The diaper bag is stocked with travel wipes, a changing mat, and other changing essentials. I have bottles of varying sizes. I have two types of pacifiers. We have a pack n' play that will be kept downstairs as a sleeping/changing area, so I don't have to climb up and down the stairs every time. We have a pram that we'll be using as a bassinet in our bedroom where she'll be sleeping the first couple months. We have a swing. We have TWO Baby Bjorn carriers. We have a tummy mat (which is nice, since most of our downstairs is hardwood flooring). We even have a high chair, for later use.
I feel like we've thought of just about anything. Have we? Anything essential we're missing?

Lap pads? Great for putting over the changing table pad thing, throwing wherever you want to change her when you don't feel like walking all the way to the table, sliding under her booty when she's peed herself but you don't want to change all the sheets she's sleeping on top of, putting under her face when she's having tummy time in case of spit ups, etc. Man, those things have a lot of uses.
Do you have a bottle and formula just in case? Sometimes they have you supplement with formula for a few days even if you're exclusively breastfeeding.
They usually lose a bit of weight between the time they are born and the day you take them home, so you should be fine with a newborn size, I think.
You're getting so close! Hope you're feeling well!
Amy,
I DO have the lap pads, in a couple different sizes. I have bottles, too, including the 4 oz newborn size, but no formula. By the same token, I haven't invested in a pump, either, though that's also something I plan on needing. I'm sort of waiting to see how that all pans out in the first couple days.
Thanks for your thoughts!
Maria,
If you dont mind hand-me-overs, lol, send me your address! I have two girly Boppy covers you are welcome to, also some play pen sheets. You sound like you are well equipped! I also have a breast pump if you would like one. I saw the formula comments also...of my three deliveries only one nurse ever got pushy with the formula thing. Mia will eat when shes ready, and I think its best not to introduce formula first thing. Once I had introduced formula to Sophia she wouldnt stay committed to breast feeding (the bottle is less work for them). With my first, the nurse made me feel like Charlotte would starve if she didnt get formula right away....but I learned that a baby is actually okay for at least 24 hours after delivery, as far as nourishment. Anyway, thats just been my experience. I see "The Mitten" on your profile...I love that book! :)
Also, if you are breast feeding you may need Lansinoh or some type of lanolin ointment, its like Chapstick for your girls lol. The first couple days can be painful.
