(You can skip this if you're totally not into bodily functions. I promise I'll have something less gag-inducing up tomorrow...)
This week, we decided to see where Mia was in terms of readiness for potty training. On Monday morning, I made a big deal about how this was big girl day and we were going to practice using the potty. There was alot of over-the-top excitement and smiling and clapping and general mood-setting. About 20 minutes later, we were downstairs when her full bladder started to leak, and she looked at me panicked... and then stopped the flow. We ran to the potty, had a success and subsequent loud celebration, and that set the groundwork for FIVE more successful trips during the day, and only one accident that evening. It was like a dream! Could it seriously be that easy?
Yeah, no.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, she flat-out refused to play. There was lots of yelling and screaming on her part, and refusal to repeat her success of the day before. On Wednesday, after I cleaned up six accidents, one of which was on a pair of my shoes, it became apparent that this was becoming too much of a fight. And because I don't want potty-training to be a traumatic experience, and because she's only just turned 2... we're back in diapers. At least for another month, until after our beach vacation in June, and then we'll revisit the idea.
But here's what I learned: She CAN do it. For whatever reason, she's choosing not to. For now, that's okay. Getting up and down off the floor to change diapers is not going to be as easy by the time we get to the end of the summer, but we'll cross that bridge when (if?) we come to it.
And she won't go to college wearing diapers (or sucking on paci). I'm pretty sure, at least.
