Memorial Day

On the Sunday before Memorial Day, I remember those who went before me and paid the ultimate price for freedom. I also give thanks to God that none of those with whom I've served have made that ultimate sacrifice. My thoughts turn, then, to the shipmates with whom I've served.

The above video was shot by an anonymous deckplate Sailor (the Navy's word for "grunt") and set to music during our last deployment to Iraq, Pakistan, and Somalia. By the other people who appear in the video, the Sailor was likely in either the torpedoes or the gunnery division. Not a single commissioned officer or senior NCO appears in the video, and it pretty well captures life at sea, on and off duty; from racing back and forth between a position off Karachi to a position off Mogadishu, to having a barbecue on the Fourth of July and eating your cheeseburger seated atop the missile tubes, and finally, playing the video game Guitar Hero on top of the computer that does Tomahawk missile targeting.

Happy Memorial Day to my shipmates, and especially all those downrange.
