In Her Shoes

My wife's love affair with shoes is well-known. Her previous blog, before we began writing together, was "In My Shoes". That corner of the cosmos included a quote from the title of a book by the same name, by Jenifer Weiner: "I get something out of them. When I feel down, I like to treat myself. Clothes never look any good, and food just makes me fatter, but shoes always fit."

The DeWitt Army Community Hospital at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, offers rooming-in, where babies sleep in the same room with mom, and there's space for Dad to sleep in too. Dad's accommodations are a pull-out chair that I could never make pull out...it always just turned over when I pulled on it. Especially since we only live 20 minutes away, I elected to sleep at home and then drive back and forth to the hospital each day.

This morning I was on my way out the door when the phone rang. It was Love: "Um, could you please bring me another pair of shoes? I don't want to wear the hospital slippers anymore." I ran back upstairs and grabbed the first thing I could find; a pair of hot pink New York & Company flip-flops. Mia was feeding when I got to Love's room, but I slipped the flip-flops on and snapped this image for posterity.

Hospital gown and New York & Co flip-flops...now THAT is a love affair with shoes!
