19 Weeks

We knew going into the sonogram yesterday that if it was a girl, we already had a name. The first granddaughter in my family, for generations back, is Maria Theresa. When we found out we were pregnant, Kevin and I discussed this and decided that we wanted to continue this tradition. However, it's important to me that our child have an identitity separate from mine, despite sharing the same name. And so...while her name will be Maria Theresa, we will call her Mia. This, as it turns out, is not just a random name either, but a nickname my younger sister gave to me when she had trouble pronouncing my full name, and is still occassionally used as a term of endearment within my family.

This week in the life of Baby Mia:
  • As of yesterday, she is 8 1/2 inches long, and weighs about 9 ounces.
  • Hair is starting to sprout on her head
  • Her arms and legs are proportioned and the neurons between the muscles and brains are connecting, so that she has more control over her movements.
  • Her gums now have toothbuds
  • Cartilage throughout her body is turning into bone
  • From head to rump, she is approximately the size of a large tomato.
